He inherited a small chiefdom and left a kingdom. The short stabbing spear, the regimental system and the bull-horn encirclement were his, and southern Africa was reshaped around what he built.
Shaka kaSenzangakhona founded the Zulu Kingdom and ruled it from 1816 until his death in 1828.
He took a minor chiefdom and turned it into the dominant power of the region through a thorough reorganisation of its army — replacing the thrown assegai with the iklwa, a short-hafted broad-bladed spear made for close combat, building a standing regimental system, and drilling the impondo zenkomo, the bull-horn formation whose flanking horns closed around an enemy while the chest held them. The kingdom he made, and the upheaval that spread outward from its wars, shaped the political map of southern Africa for the century that followed.
